[SgtBoom] Hey TD
[Anon] Is that everyone?
[TeenDetective] Yea, sorry I’m late. I was just wrapping up a day case.
[SgtBoom] The divorce thing?
[TeenDetective] Yea, turns out he wasn’t cheating on her, he was planning a surprise party. She wasn’t happy with the answer, but I got my hourly fees in.
[MCNapsalot] Really? Sounds like a crock of shit.
[TeenDetective] It was a waste of time, but I got paid, so... Source night?
[Anon] Yes. I’m an employee at Arcellus Shipping. I’ve always known the company was shady, but... This is bad.
[NancyDrewfan34] Whats up?
[Anon] Have you ever heard the name ‘Silk’ in regards to the Syndicates?
[SgtBoom] We all know Silk in here. Dude’s legend. Thief who likes to rob the syndicates and leaves calling cards. Badass.
[TeenDetective] I think dude’s a she, Boom.
[SgtBoom] How you figure?
[TeenDetective] Just a feeling I guess.
[SgtBoom] Point is, Silk is someone we like, here.
[Anon] Well the problem is that the company thinks its found Silk. There was someone staking out our office and the head of Security just put out a $5000 bonus to whoever tracks them down.
[MCNapsalot] Shit! We have to warn them!
[TeenDetective] Where is the Arcellus office? East end, right? Near Fifth?
[Anon] Worse, one of our enforcers says he thinks he’s tracked them down. He’s going out tonight.
[Anon] Yes, but be careful. If any of our security see you and you look like you don’t belong there, it could get ugly.
[SgtBoom] TD if you’re planning something stupid and reckless, I’m against it.
[TeenDetective] I’ll be there in an hour.
<-- TeenDetective has quit (Leaving)
[SgtBoom] TD don’t go afte
[SgtBoom] God damn it
[NancyDrewfan34] :\
[MCNapsalot] You honestly can’t say you didn’t see it coming, dude.

‘Cover and Binding: New, Used and Rare books’ was a hole in the wall bookstore sitting in the part of town sitting in a part of town that could best be described as a few inches from being considered ‘The Bad Part’. It had a healthy little selection of recent titles on display. On prouder display, however, were the old books. Leather bound tomes of old literature sitting next to well-loved paperbacks from the seventies and sixties.

Everything sat on wooden shelves, few of which seemed to come from the same place. Different types of wood and different designs made the store asymmetrical, but it had a sort of charm that you don’t get at one of the bigger stores.

Behind the counter sat a young woman, a pair of glasses perched on her nose. She had high cheekbones and warm brown eyes, which were peering with slight amusement at the book half-hidden behind the counter.

She’d owned the bookstore for a few years, and had taken a liking to the expectation that a bookstore owner be at least somewhat eccentric. She also took advantage of that fact, keeping whatever hours suited her, and tending to wear comfortable clothes down occasionally slippers. She did live in the apartment above the store after all.

She flipped through her book, waiting for the electronic bell to call out that a customer had entered. She hummed softly along with her radio, which was, at the moment, playing Queens Of The Stone Age. Overall she was content. This life was working out pretty well.

The door rang, and she peered up. The man who walked in didn’t look like her kind of clientele, she noted. He was six feet tall, at least, and hefty, though from how he moved she could tell he bore plenty of muscle. His nose was a flat slab, very nearly. His pudgy lips were locked in a scowl.

She put her book down slowly and smiled pleasantly at him.

“Evening, Sir. Welcome to the store, can I help you find something?” She asked, keeping her tone as light as possible despite the immediate tension in her gut.

“Yeah,” He replied, not bothering to look at any of the shelves, his eyes locked directly on her, “Looking for someone.”

Her smile twitched, “Ah, well, this is a book store. It’s on the sign and everything. I’d have thought the shelves covered in books would’ve also been a hint… So, I don’t really help find PEOPLE, Sir.” She said, maintaining that same tone of voice.

“She’s a troublemaker,” He said, walking closer, “A punk kid who has a stupid, dangerous hobby.”

Her smile grew brittle, “Well, I hope you find her, but I can guarantee you she isn’t here.”

“A blonde girl,” He continued, undeterred, “Who likes to steal from dangerous people and leave behind little calling cards. Has a name for herself,” He reached into his coat, drawing out a handgun and aiming it at her, “Silk.”

She slowly raised her hands… “Sir… You’re making a mistake.” She said quietly, “Do I look like a thief to you?”

“I don’t know,” He rumbled, smirking cruelly, “Do you?”

She squeezed her eyes shut, “Look, I’m not whoever it is you think I am. If you want, you can take the money out of the drawer and go, I won’t tell anyone you came in here. Hell, I’ll even let you take a book! Any book off of the shelves you like!” She said forcing a smile, the cheer in her voice ringing false.

“I followed you here from the Arcellus office, Silk. You’ve been casing it for the past three days, and you didn’t think we’d notice,” He smiled. It was ugly. “Well we did. So get up, and follow me to my car. We’re going back to the office to have a chat about what happens to thieves like you…”

She licked her lips, “Well even if I WAS this thief, technically you haven’t been stolen from, yet. And if I WAS this thief, I’m sure I wouldn’t want to steal from you now. So how about you take the money, a book, give me a stern warning, and we call it good?”

He tilted the barrel of the gun up a few times, indicating the direction he wanted her to go. She slowly stood up, “…It was worth a shot.”

The door rang again. “The store is closed,” The man snarled, “Please come again later.”

“I would, but I have a rare book I wanted to sell tonight,” Came a voice from behind the man “I was really hoping to get an estimate from the owner, here…”

The man groaned, rolling his eyes, “The store is CLOSED,” He repeated, starting to turn around, “Now walk the fuck away-“

A heavy leather book slammed into his temple mid-turn. His head snapped to the side and he staggered. The book swung back around and slammed into his jaw, sending a small spray of blood flying. The man dropped to his knees, and the book came down onto the crown of his head. He flopped to the floor, out cold.

Anabelle McHelen clutched the book in her hands, red hair flying around her head as she finished the swing. She was a good foot shorter than the man, standing at five-nothing. Bright green eyes glared down at the thug, and she took a heaving breath, “It’s a Nancy Drew compliation. I was wondering if bloodstains would diminish the value,” she spat down at him.

The girl behind the counter hopped it, “I’ve been looking for that edition. I’ll give you ninety five dollars, considering the blood. I’m Kate Carver, owner of Cover and Binding, and I’m REALLY glad you came along when you did, Miss…”

“McHelen,” Ana replied, “Anabelle. My friends call me Ana.” She smiled sheepishly, “Uh… Sorry if I got blood on anything.”

“Oh, jeez,” Kate replied, “Like I’m gonna complain, NOW.” She laughed, the tension of what had happened making it sound slightly mad, “So… You ARE just here to sell the book, right?”

Ana’s eyes flicked away for a moment, before shifting back to Kate, “Uh… You’re Silk, right?”

Kate pursed her lips, her eyebrows drooping. “…Does EVERYONE know now? Jeez, what’s the point of a cover identity if people can just guess like that…”

“Well,” Ana admitted, “I got a tip from someone who works at Arcellus that they thought you’d been staking them out. Apparently the Syndicates are scared of you, and want you gone.”

Kate raised an eyebrow, “Wait, really? Shit, I must be doing SOMETHING right.” She thought about that for a moment, before shaking her head, “Wait, no, they know where I work, now…”

“Well, HE does,” Ana said, jerking a thumb at the thug on the ground, “But if you call the cops, he won’t have time to tell his buddies.”

Kate pondered that, “You’ve got a point there.”

Ana looked at the store for a moment, “…Well I guess this answers one of my questions.”

“What’s that?” Kate asked.

“Your name IS an Eddings reference, isn’t it?”

Kate smirked, “First one to get it! I took a liking to him when I first read the Belgariad.”

Ana giggled, “Me, too. If anyone DOESN’T like Silk, I’m not sure they’re reading the same series.”

Ana’s mirth died suddenly as she heard a gun click.

“Drop the book,” Came a slurred voice as the thug pushed himself to his feet, the gun pointed at the pair, “And put your fuckin’ hands up.” Blood dribbled from his mouth and an ugly bruise was spreading across his temple.

Ana’s eyes went wide and the book fell to the ground with a thud, “I… Thought I hit him harder.”

Kate raised her hands, glaring at the man, “You must get hit in the head a lot, handsome.”

“Shut UP.” He said, frustration bubbling in his voice, “And follow me. Now.”

Ana turned and gave Kate an apologetic look. Kate shrugged as best she could with her hands up, and looked to the thug, “Alright, just get your finger off the trigger, we’re following.”
---

The Arcellus office apparently had a spacious basement, but that didn’t mean they took good care of it. It was dank, moist, and smelled like mold. The thug had been joined by several of his friends in dragging the pair downstairs and restraining them. Ana had been blindfolded and felt thin cord wrapped around her wrists tightly. More rope had been tied around her upper arms, pinning them in place. Her legs, however, had been left free.

Kate, on the other hand, was bound similarly, though her feet were bound as well, and she was gagged, a knotted scarf wedged between her lips… but her eyes were left uncovered. Both girls were sitting against the wall of the basement, the dim lighting leaving the room a mess of shadows.

“Well,” Ana said, her voice only trembling slightly “I don’t think they’d planned on having two of us.”

“Mmph.” Kate agreed, grumbling into her gag, idly tugging on her bonds.

“They didn’t have enough rope, and they didn’t have another scarf. I’m just glad they didn’t have a roll of
tape handy or something.”

Kate nodded, before remembering Ana couldn’t see it, and gave another muffled agreement.

“Finally, they’re not holding us in a cell. We’re just in some sort of open basement, so… There’s gotta be something in the room we can use, right? We can get out of this if we work together,” She worked her way to her feet, pushing her back against the wall as she slid up it, “Alright… Okay. Kate? If we don’t get out of this we’ll… We’ll be alright. I have a friend… A  brother.” She hesitated, chewing her lower lip, “It’s complicated. Point is, his name is Aq, and he’ll come for us.”

“Wuh gai?” Kate asked, “Ahemph awh deeh gaif heah?”

Ana paused, “…You’ll understand when we meet him. As of approximately twenty minutes ago, he’s been looking. I told him what I’d be doing, so he’ll be coming here… I want to get out before he throws himself at them.”

Kate rolled her eyes. One guy wasn’t going to get them out of shit. He’d have at least a dozen armed guards to deal with. Unless he was a walking arsenal, he’d be beaten down in seconds. And even if he WAS, they’d then have a lot of dead bodies to deal with. Kate shuddered. She didn’t want to deal with corpses. Not again

Ana steadied herself on her feet, “Alright, Kate. Look around… If you see something that I can cut myself free on, give me two grunts. I’ll start turning, and as soon as I’m pointed at it give me another grunt. If there’s something in my way, grunt. Then I’ll turn again, and we’ll keep going until I get there… Give me a long grunt if someone’s coming.”

“Mmhm.” Kate said. It was a solid plan, actually, even if it was risky as all hell. Still, what other shots did they HAVE?

Ana let out a long breath, “…Let’s do this.”
This story is out of date! I've since completely changed the Anaverse and the characterization of our heroes. If you want to see the newer version, please read The Knebeln Girl on Heartgear's page!(Warning, it's a LOT darker than this one.)

The first part of Anabelle's story, based on the ongoing RP between myself and :iconsneakysilk:!
Today we find out how Ana met Kate, and how their adventures together began.

Ana, Aq, and everyone else belong to :iconteen-detective:

Kate Carver belongs to :iconsneakysilk:

Alright, I'm finally getting around to writing stuff because it's about darn time. And since Heartgear was kind enough to post the commission of Ana and Kate, interest has shot up. So here we go!
